Introduction to Hadith Studies: Definitions of Hadith, Sunnah, Khabar, and Athar, and the Scope of the Field
Keywords:
Hadith, Sunnah, Khabar, Athar, Hadith StudiesAbstract
This study aims to explain the definitions of hadith, sunnah, khabar, and athar, as well as the scope of hadith studies. This discussion is important because these four terms are closely related, yet differ in meaning and scope of application. This study employs a library research method by collecting and examining written sources, including books and journal articles related to hadith studies. The data are analyzed using content analysis by categorizing definitions, comparing similarities and differences among scholarly views, and drawing conclusions from the sources examined. The findings indicate that hadith generally refers to everything attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), sunnah relates to his way of life and exemplary conduct, khabar may encompass reports from the Prophet as well as from other sources, while athar generally refers to narrations transmitted from the Companions and the Successors (tabi'un). Furthermore, the scope of hadith studies encompasses 'Ilm al-Hadith Riwayah, which examines the transmission of hadith, and 'Ilm al-Hadith Dirayah, which investigates the conditions of the chain of transmission (sanad), the text (matan), and the status of hadith in terms of its acceptance or rejection. An understanding of these terms and their respective scopes is expected to provide students and readers with a foundation for studying hadith sciences in greater depth.
