Peer Review Process

Hasanah in Education (HIE) applies a double-blind peer review process to ensure an objective, fair, transparent, and rigorous evaluation of submitted manuscripts. The identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential throughout the review process.

1. Initial Editorial Screening

All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial screening by the editorial team to determine whether they:

  • Fit the journal's Focus and Scope;
  • Follow the Author Guidelines and manuscript template;
  • Meet the journal's academic and structural requirements;
  • Demonstrate sufficient originality and scholarly contribution;
  • Meet applicable research and publication ethics requirements; and
  • Comply with the journal's plagiarism and AI policies.

Manuscripts that do not meet the basic requirements may be returned to the authors for correction or rejected before entering the peer-review process.

2. Plagiarism Check

All submitted manuscripts are subject to a plagiarism and similarity check before peer review.

HIE applies a maximum similarity threshold of 20% for submitted manuscripts. The similarity percentage is evaluated in context by the editorial team and is not interpreted solely as an automatic basis for acceptance or rejection.

Manuscripts with a similarity index above 20% may be returned to the authors for revision before proceeding to peer review. Manuscripts containing substantial unattributed copying, plagiarism, duplicate publication, fabricated content, or other forms of academic misconduct may be rejected or investigated in accordance with the journal's publication ethics procedures.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts properly acknowledge and cite all sources.

3. Reviewer Selection

Manuscripts that pass the initial screening and plagiarism check are assigned to qualified reviewers with expertise relevant to the subject of the manuscript.

HIE normally assigns at least two independent reviewers to evaluate each research manuscript.

Reviewers are selected based on their academic expertise, research experience, methodological competence, relevant publication record, and absence of conflicts of interest.

4. Double-Blind Peer Review

HIE uses a double-blind peer review system.

Under this system:

  • Reviewers do not know the identity of the authors.
  • Authors do not know the identity of the reviewers.
  • Reviewers evaluate manuscripts independently and objectively.
  • Authors are required to remove unnecessary identifying information from the anonymized manuscript.

5. Review Criteria

Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on criteria including:

  • Relevance to the journal's Focus and Scope;
  • Originality and novelty;
  • Significance of the research problem;
  • Clarity of objectives or research questions;
  • Quality of the literature review;
  • Appropriateness of the theoretical framework, where applicable;
  • Methodological rigor;
  • Quality of data analysis;
  • Accuracy and clarity of results;
  • Quality of discussion;
  • Contribution to educational theory and practice;
  • Quality and relevance of references;
  • Research and publication ethics; and
  • Quality of academic writing.

6. Reviewer Recommendations

Reviewers may recommend:

  • Accept
  • Minor Revision
  • Major Revision
  • Reject

Reviewer recommendations are advisory. The final editorial decision is made by the editor based on the reviewers' comments, editorial assessment, and the journal's standards.

7. Revision Process

When revisions are requested, authors must respond carefully to all reviewer and editor comments.

Authors should submit:

  • A revised manuscript; and
  • A detailed Response to Reviewers explaining how each comment has been addressed.

Substantial revisions may be returned to the reviewers for further evaluation.

8. Final Editorial Decision

Following the peer-review and revision process, the editor makes the final decision regarding publication.

The possible final decisions include acceptance, further revision, or rejection.

A manuscript is accepted only when it meets the journal's academic, ethical, methodological, and editorial standards.

9. Publication Timeline

HIE aims to complete the editorial, peer-review, revision, and publication process efficiently while maintaining rigorous academic standards.

The maximum expected duration from initial manuscript submission to final publication is six (6) months, provided that authors respond to editorial and reviewer requests within the specified deadlines.

The six-month period may vary in exceptional circumstances, including difficulties in securing appropriate reviewers, extensive revisions, ethical investigations, technical issues, or delays beyond the journal's control.

10. Reviewer Confidentiality

Reviewers must treat all manuscripts and related materials as confidential.

Reviewers must not share, reproduce, distribute, or use unpublished information from submitted manuscripts for purposes unrelated to the review process.

11. Conflicts of Interest

Reviewers must disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest.

Reviewers should decline an assignment if a personal, professional, institutional, financial, or academic relationship could compromise their impartiality.

12. Use of Artificial Intelligence by Reviewers

Reviewers must comply with the journal's AI and Generative AI Policy.

Confidential manuscripts, unpublished research data, reviewer reports, and other protected materials must not be uploaded to public or third-party generative AI systems without appropriate authorization and safeguards.

AI tools must not replace the reviewer's independent scholarly judgment.

13. Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are based on scholarly quality, originality, relevance, methodological rigor, ethical standards, and the journal's policies.

Editorial decisions are not influenced by the author's nationality, institutional affiliation, gender, religion, political views, personal relationships, commercial interests, or other irrelevant characteristics.

14. Appeals

Authors who believe that an editorial decision resulted from a significant procedural error or misunderstanding may submit a reasoned appeal to the editorial office.

The appeal should clearly explain the grounds for the appeal and provide supporting evidence where appropriate.

15. Publication

A manuscript is published only after successfully completing the required editorial screening, plagiarism check, peer-review process, revisions, and final editorial approval.

HIE is committed to maintaining a rigorous and transparent peer-review process while aiming to complete the publication process within six months from submission to publication.
